Frequently asked questions

What is CineReel?

CineReel is a media player for Apple devices. It connects to your media server and gives you a fast, native playback experience on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV.

When will CineReel be available?

CineReel is available now — for Mac on the Download page, and for iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV on the App Store.

How do I set up CineReel on my Apple TV?

Open CineReel on your Apple TV — it shows a QR code. Scan it with your iPhone camera to open a short form, enter your media server details once, and your Apple TV connects automatically.

How much does CineReel cost?

CineReel is free to download with core playback included. A single one-time purchase unlocks everything — no subscriptions.

Which devices are supported?

iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS 17+), Mac (macOS 14+), and Apple TV (tvOS 17+).

Does CineReel do everything the official Plex apps do?

Almost. Plex account sign-in, multiple servers, profiles, and offline downloads are all in now (Free + Pro). A few things — detail pages, Live TV & DVR — genuinely aren't supported yet. See cinereel.app/limitations for the full honest list.

What's this about?

Creating a revocable, scoped Plex token

Don't want to hand out your admin token — to test with a friend's server, or just to keep CineReel's access limited? Use a token you can restrict and kill independently of your main account.

Recommended: a Plex Home Managed User

A separate identity, limited to just the libraries you pick, deletable to revoke.

  1. At app.plex.tv go to Settings → Users & Sharing, enable Plex Home if it isn't already, then Add Managed User — a restricted profile. Grant it just the libraries you want to test with.
  2. Click the avatar in the top-right and Switch User to that managed user.
  3. Get that user's token: open any item → ⋯ / Get Info → View XML, then copy the X-Plex-Token=value from the URL. Same manual method as before — but now it's the managed user's token, not your admin one.
  4. To revoke: Settings → Users & Sharing → delete the Managed User. Its token dies with it.

Simpler alternative

Skip Plex Home entirely: any signed-in client's token shows under Account → Authorized Devices — remove that device to kill its token. The nuclear option is Account → Sign out of all devices, which invalidates everything.
